Decatur is a town in the northern portion of Texas. This small city is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth region with only 25 miles of space between the areas. When looking to explore this part of Texas, you may want to consider hotels Decatur has to offer.

Decatur may be a small town, but it has many of its own attractions. Plus, due to its close proximity to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, visitors have access to any number of activities.

The Waggoner Mansion is a wonderful destination for those who wish to view a piece of the city's history. The mansion was built in 1883 and is a great example of Victorian masonry architecture. Today, the house still has a lot of its original materials and work, making it unique among the other Victorian homes in the area. The home has a large basement and sixteen different rooms including six and a half bathrooms and six bedrooms. Visitors can tour the home and learn more about the builders and residents.

The Woody Cabin is an entirely different building with just as much character and history. Sam Woody built this cabin for his family in 1854. They settled there due to the abundance of fish and game in the grasslands and lakes. Woody found out that another man had settled in that area a year before so he and that man along with a few others used the cabin as a haven while hunting and gathering. Visitors can view the cabin and enjoy its historical significance.

The Oaklawn Cemetery is another historic site in the city. The earliest grave marker in the cemetery is for Eli Lindley who died in 1867 and the first person buried there, Eli's sister, was placed in 1855. The cemetery makes a great stop between other activities as you learn more about the history of the town. You can look for certain dates, research the family names and enjoy the natural beauty surrounding the cemetery.

The Wise County Heritage Museum now sits within the former Decatur Baptist College building, which was built in 1892. The museum has a wonderful genealogical research center as well as other artifacts and displays and even a gift shop. You can research your own family history, or enjoy the history of the area when you visit.

The Wise County Courthouse was built in 1895 for the large sum of $110.000. It took just under a year to complete and is largely made from pink granite. The building is now on the list of National Historic Places and it is also considered a Texas Historical Landmark. You can tour the various quarters and chambers in the courthouse after you view the beauty of the architecture on the outside.

If you really want to feel as if you have moved into the past, visit Decatur's Main Street. This downtown square is filled with history within every block and every building. A volunteer program began in the area in 1994 in order to rehabilitate and revitalize the businesses in the area. Many of the old businesses have greatly improved over the years and now offer visitors plenty of entertainment.

Since you are located close to the enormous Dallas-Fort Worth area, it is a good idea to explore that larger region as well. These cities draw nearly 5.5 million visitors each year and they are the number one tourist destination in Texas. They have preserved a unique mix of Western heritage along with unrivaled art and culture. Fort Worth is known for its large zoo, the Wild West Stockyards district and the cultural district that houses many museums. Dallas is known for the Sixth Floor Museum, the Six Flags theme park, the Cowboys stadium and many other attractions. Both cities have enough to entertain any traveler for days.

When looking for hotels Decatur has many different options to consider. If you are in the area on business, you may want accommodations with a business center and free Wi-Fi. If you are visiting to relax and enjoy time away from home, you might want a fitness center, spa services and other features. You can find these types of accommodations in this city and stay close enough to the larger Dallas-Fort Worth region. Hotels Decatur has to offer are comfortable and convenient for any type of traveler.
