Visitors can view the cabin and enjoy its historical significance.

The Oaklawn Cemetery is another historic site in the city. The earliest grave marker in the cemetery is for Eli Lindley who died in 1867 and the first person buried there, Eli's sister, was placed in 1855. The cemetery makes a great stop between other activities as you learn more about the history of the town. You can look for certain dates, research the family names and enjoy the natural beauty surrounding the cemetery.

The Wise County Heritage Museum now sits within the former Decatur Baptist College building, which was built in 1892. The museum has a wonderful genealogical research center as well as other artifacts and displays and even a gift shop. The Wise County Courthouse was built in 1895 for the large sum of $110.000. It took just under a year to complete and is largely made from pink granite. The building is now on the list of National Historic Places and it is also considered a Texas Historical Landmark. You can tour the various quarters and chambers in the courthouse after you view the beauty of the architecture on the outside.

If you really want to feel as if you have moved into the past, visit Decatur's Main Street. This downtown square is filled with history within every block and every building. A volunteer program began in the area in 1994 in order to rehabilitate and revitalize the businesses in the area. Many of the old businesses have greatly improved over the years and now offer visitors plenty of entertainment.
